You can now search for songs on Google by humming or whistling a tune

Google has revealed a new feature that will have you humming or whistling your favourite tune.

Google’s ‘hum to search’ feature now lets you identify a song that is stuck in your head simply by humming or whistling it. It should making naming that mystery tune that much easier.

To use the feature, just hit the little microphone button in Google’s Mobile App or the Google Search widget on your browser. Hum or whistle your favourite tune, and then let Google do its thing.

Another option is to search ‘what’s this song?’ and then start humming.

The feature is currently supported in more than 20 languages, and Google says it will add more languages in time.

The technology works by detecting the general sonic frequency and waveforms of a particular melody. It is significanly more macro than listening for individual frequencies, in the way that Apple’s Shazam does.
