When Tommy Hilfiger burst onto the scene in 1985, it was with help from celebrated advertising art director George Lois.
Widely regarded as one of the most creative people in advertising history, George Lois – who also created some of the most well-known Esquire covers in history – looked to distinguish Tommy Hilfiger from outer interchangeable fashion campaigns at the time.
He created a billboard based on the popular game ‘Hangman’, which put Tommy Hilfiger’s name alongside three other successful American designers, Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein. Needless to say, the campaign was a success.
According to Hilfiger, “Seeing my name on a Times Square billboard in New York City was a surreal experience and created a big turning point in my career.”
Today Tommy Hilfiger announced that it was honouring that legendary campaign as part of its ‘Being Bold’ capsule collection. “At a time when our brand DNA of being bold and breaking conventions is more important than ever, I’m really excited to revisit and share our heritage with the next generation of Tommy fans.”
