The iconic diving watch has been updated to go on land

Blancpain has just unveiled a new take on its legendary Fifty Fathoms watch.

The watch was originally created in the 1950s for French Navy divers. In the 1970s, the case was evolved adding day/date indications and a more cushion-shaped case. All of that remains intact today, and the new desert version of the watch includes more than a few nods to the original.

The originally Bathyscaphe can be seen in Blancpain’s new Desert version, including a gradient sandy beige dial and wide rectangular hands. The extra-long seconds hand helps legibility , while the chapter ring (with five-minute intervals) is meant to be readable many hundreds of meters under the sea.

It is powered by an automatic calibre 1315 DD movement, which gives you a five day power reserve. You can see the movement ticking along via the sapphire crystal case back.

The new watch is available later this month from Blancpain boutiques around the region.

In other news, this new watch is probably the only way to get your hands on piece of Bugatti history.

Based on the legend of ‘the black car’, in 1938 a one-of-a-kind black Bugatti went missing from brand founder Jean Bugatti’s personal collection. Last year the story inspired the creation of La VoitureNoire, another one-of-a-kind tribute that sold for 11 million Euros..
