Hublot’s revolutionary technology lets them create watches made entirely from sapphire

Plenty of watches use sapphire glass crystal – it’s incredibly strong and protects against scratches – but Hublot’s Sapphire collection goes a step further.

It has crafted the middle, bezel and back of the case out of the hardwearing material, and that is no easy feat. You see, you don’t find sapphire crystals – you grow them. And the process is incredibly expensive, and costly.

Fortunately, Hublot has become somewhat of a dab hand at sapphire-making and can now produce versions of its Big Bang Unico out of clear and coloured sapphire.

Currently the range varies in colour – and new models are being added every year – but the Sapphire collection currently comes in clear, black, blue, yellow.

The skeleton dials are made from transparent resin, while the screws, crown and buckle are made from titanium. That’s all to better show off the Unico HUB1242 movement.
