The FrogX comes with an entirely transparent case and a hidden motif

MB&F has just pulled the warps of the HM3 Frog – inspired by the brand’s first and best-loved mascot – of the same name.

The watch gets its moniker from the two globular ‘eyes’ that display the hours and the minutes, along with a wide ‘mouth’ that includes the brand’s signature battle-axe rotor.

After nine previous iterations, many people thought they’d seen everything the HM3 could possible do. But the new version is significantly wackier than the original.

For one thing, the case is made of sapphire crystal making it entirely transparent. The hours and the minutes are displayed via two thin domes milled out of aluminum, beneath round markers (that look like a frog’s pupils). And the whole display now glows in the dark, thanks to Super-LumiNova accents in a variety of colours.

The movant was thought-up by Jean-Marc Wiederrecht of Agenhor, and built on a Girard-Perregaux base. The winding crown came from Rayform, which creates light-shaping surfaces that can re-direct light rays into specific messages.

At the right angle, the crown projects a hidden message – the image of a battle-axe rotor.

“There is something incredibly weird and at the same time enticing to rework a product that was created 10 years back,” MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser wrote on Instagram.

“Ten years of getting out of my comfort zone, of fun, of craziness separate the original from this anniversary piece. Growing up without really growing up and moving the creative goalposts way further.”

“So what has changed? A full sapphire case, a ‘mega’ three-part rotor, a lot of lume and the light reflection secret signature created by the young Rayform team.”

The HM3 FrogX is available in three colours – blue, purple and turquois – and are limited to just ten a piece. It will set you back US$152,000.
