Tyler Blevins – better known by Twitch tag ‘Ninja’ – has been congratulated for changing his live stream during mealtimes out of solidarity with those fasting at Ramadan.
His live stream with more than 14 million followers, 455 million overall views, and a paid-subscriber count upwards of 20,000.
As shown on his live stream in a clip which has near 400,000 views, Ninja took a break from playing Fortnite to eat some food, when a Muslim member of his chat – and keep in mind his chat is near impossible to read as thousands send messages at once, stated “Bruh, I’m fasting”. At this point the streamer turned off his camera and said “Sorry to the people who are doing Ramadan. I’ll make sure to hide my screen when I eat for the rest of Ramadan.”
To many people outside of the Middle East, the Holy Month of Ramadan and fasting aren’t given the same level of media attention or government support. Working hours remain the same, and those fasting must stay vigilant.
In the past, celebs such as supermodel sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid have shown respect and support for Ramadan on Twitter, but it has never extended beyond that.
Ninja, who has had his fair share of slip-ups in the past (such as using racial slurs in a rap song and refusing to stream with women) has now got a flood of support online, mainly from Muslim fans, praising him for his subtle move and saying how they have “mad respect”.
Sadly, not everyone got the picture. Two fellow streamers – who were voice chatting with Ninja at the time – remained totally oblivious to Ramadan, and asked him what he was eating.
