Some artists’ legacies do stand the test of time. But others – such as Ai-Da – really will live forever. That’s because ‘she’s’ a robot.
Introducing Ai-Da, the creation of art dealer Aiden Meller who claims she is the world’s first ultra-realistic humanoid arist. The robot can draw creatively, thanks to built-in artificial intelligence.
The art-dealer unveiled Ai-Da in Oxford last week, ahead of her first exhibition.
According to Meller, “She is fully algorithmic… fully creative.” He went on to insist that, “She is not an expensive printer. We do not know what she’s going to do.”
Ai-Da has built-in cameras for eyes, along with a robotic arm to draw with. The robot can currently only hold hard tools such as pencils and chalk, and not paintbrushes.
Meller first thought-up Ai-Da (so named after Ada Lovelace, the English mathematician) in 2011. Reasoning that the coming age of artificial intelligence was almost here, he set about creating a robotic artist who could fuse his ideas of art into the physical form.
He decided that she should be a female, because he argued the art and coding worlds needed more female representation. “She’s got a persona, she’s an avatar, she’s fiction, she’s real,” he said.
“She has the incredible technologies and abilities to produce remarkable, innovative, creative artwork,” he said.
According to Meller, everything in Ai-Da’s first exhibition has already been sold. He’s said the total cost of all the works is over US$1 million.
