- George R.R. Martin has let slip there’s a Game of Thrones video game in the works
- He did so in a blog post discussing his thoughts on the ending of the eight-season HBO show
- The game is being developed by FromSoftware who have previously made the Dark Souls trilogy
- It will be an open-world game and a “cross between GTA V and The Elder Scrolls.”
George R.R. Martin has confirmed that he is working on a fantasy action videogame alongside FromSoftware – the guys behind Dark Souls and Sekiro.
He outlined his plans in a blog post discussing what he thought of the end of the eight-season HBO show Game of Thrones. In the post, Martin confirms that a GoT video game is being made in Japan.
“I’ve consulted on a video game out of Japan,” he notes as an aside to previous rumours about Tokyo studio FromSoftware.
The video game studio has received international recognition thanks to the success of cult hit Demon’s Souls and its follow-up the Dark Souls trilogy. After that, it launched Bloodborne, and most recently Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
The tone and the setting of the Souls games are already quite similar to that of Game of Thrones. Both games take place in a medieval fantasy setting, and it wouldn’t be hard to re-create the likes of Dragonstone, Dreadfort and Winterfell using the game’s graphics engine.
The game is supposedly open-world, less linear that Sekiro and Bloodborne games. According to insiders, it will be a cross between Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Gameplay would probably involve travelling on horseback between kingdoms, battling the ruler and taking their kingdom in a quest to control all seven kingdoms.
Following the May 20 blog post, specialist Japanese gaming website Gematsu confirmed the rumour with a source close to FromSoftware, who also said the game would be officially unveiled at Microsoft’s E3 presentation in June.
