Saudi Arabia’s first football league for women has kicked-off, after being postponed from earlier in the year due to the coronavirus.
The league includes more than 600 players and 24 teams, including teams based in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.
While the opening matches were not televised, the league is another step forward for women’s participation in sport in the Kingdom.
A total of seven matches took place this week in the capital of Riyadh and Jeddah. Teams will compete within their own cities, with the winners eventually heading to a championship cup.
The league is run by the government’s Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA), as is meant to empower women and encourage them to become active in sports at a community level.
The first international women’s golf tournament also took place in Saudi Arabia this week.
