The pandemic puppy boom is real

Hot on the heels of a pandemic puppy boom – as people across the world sought some four-legged company during lockdown – the number of dog influencers on Instagram and TikTok has grown exponentially.

And if being locked in your home was a good time to get a dog, then so was spending time growing its following. This has led to an increase in puppy’fluencers, or dogs on social media platforms with fans and followers.

The number one dog influencer is Jiff Pom, with 9.3 million followers on Instagram and more than 19.4 million on TikTok.

Then there’s Doug the Pug (with 3.8 million Instagram followers) and Tucker Budzyn (3.5 million fans on TikTok).

Interestingly, the popularity in pet influencers has not been equally distributed. While posts mentioning the words ‘dogs’ or ‘puppies’ grew by 38 per cent over the last few months, searches for ‘cats’ only went up 8 per cent.

This comes from a global survey that said people were spending almost 76 per cent more time on social media.

While Golden retrievers and Labradors are supposedly the world’s most popular dogs, that trend doesn’t carry over to dog influencers. The most popular puppies on Instagram are French bulldogs, pugs and British bulldogs.
