This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has just been awarded to a dog.
The dog called Foxtrot – also known as Humanitarian_Pup on Instagram – was awarded the Peace Prize for his work as part of the UN World Food Programme, for his efforts to fight hunger and prevent starvation as a weapon in war.
Foxtrot took to Instagram to share the news, with an appropriate “wowee”.
However, while Foxtrot was pleased to win the award he was also humble. “Of course it’s amazing, I do however think it would be even more amazing if we didn’t need any peace prizes because peace was the status quo in our world. But as myself and my colleagues know, this will never be the case in a world without #zerohunger.”
The award was handed out by the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Anderson.
“With this year’s award, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to turn the eyes of the world towards the millions of people who suffer from or face the threat of hunger,” Reiss-Andersen said from Stockholm.
“The World Food Programme plays a key role in multilateral cooperation on making food security an instrument of peace and has made a strong contribution toward mobilizing U.N. member states to combat the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”
The World Food Programme is known for helping feed those in the midst of famines, as well as sending food and water to villages affected by extreme weather.
Foxtrot’s home town is in Bangladesh, where he has done quite a bit of work for the cause.
“Thank you so much for all your support,” reiterated Foxtrot.
