YouTube superpower PewDiePie has said he is taking a year-long break from the social media platform, citing he is “feeling very tired”.
The 29-year-old Swedish star – real name Felix Kjellberg – found fame playing video games while commentating on them.
At one point, he was the most followed (now he is number 2) and highest-paid earner on YouTube, although he is still expected to rake in almost US$6.5-million per month on the platform.
Recently, he has been marred in controversies around anti-Semitism, as well as loudly complaining over the Chinese government’s treatment of Hong Kong protestors.
“Early next year I’ll be away for a little while. I’ll explain that later,” PewDiePie said in a video post.
“I am taking a break from YouTube next year. I wanted to say it in advance because I made up my mind. I’m tired. I’m feeling very tired. I don’t know if you can tell,” PewDiePie said, laughing.
PewDiePie currently has 102 million subscribers and was taken over by Bollywood record label T-Series (with more than 121 million subscribers) earlier this year.
PewDiePie’s girlfriend – a fellow influencer and YouTuber – said she was taking a break from the platform in October of 2018. She has yet to appear on the platform since.
