Since the first Marvel movie Iron Man was released in 2008 and every subsequent Marvel Cinematic Universe movie since, the question on everyone’s mind is when Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson would get her own standalone movie. Since then, she’s also been the subject of a casting backlash for some of her recent roles.
Digital Spy reports that in 2017, the actress was cast in the lead role in the adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, which sparked accusations of whitewashing as the original anime had an Asian protagonist.
In a recent interview with As If magazine, Scarlett explained that she feels ‘political correctness’ is dictating to actors which roles they can and cannot take on.
“As an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job,” she said.
“I feel like it’s a trend in my business and it needs to happen for various social reasons, yet there are times it does get uncomfortable when it affects the art because I feel art should be free of restrictions. I think society would be more connected if we just allowed others to have their own feelings and not expect everyone to feel the way we do.”
However that being said, Marvel fans will be pleased to note that if reports are to be believed then Johansson has already started filming the Black Widow movie, which is shooting under the title Blue Bayou.
