It will have to provide chargers or pay hefty fines

Apple ditched the complementary charger when it launched the iPhone 12, citing environmental reasons. However, that has not gone down lightly with fans, and especially the country of Brazil.

While the news that Apple would no longer include its iPhone charger with new models caused some outrage on social media (mainly from people insisting that it was an Apple cash grab), it allows the Californian technology company to ship vastly more units, and therefore cut down on carbon emissions.

Regardless of the reasons, the Brazilian government did not take the news kindly. It has now ordered Apple to include chargers in all iPhone 12 sales within the state of Sao Paulo.

Despite a back-and-forth between the technology company and Brazil, the government remained unimpressed and said that a power adapter was an essential component to use the phone (and so sales would contravene the Brazilian Consumer Defense Code).

Starting this month, Apple will have to sell its new iPhone models with a power adapter – and if it fails to do so it will lead to a hefty fine.

While the ruling currently is only relevant to the state of Sao Paolo, the government is considering expanding the decision nationwide.
