Apple released its iPhone 12 models without a charger in the box for ‘environmental reasons’, however many people have accused the California-based tech firm of simply being stingy.
However, there might be another reason why Apple decided to ditch the usual charging brick – it’s preparing to go completely wireless.
The rumour mill appears to be churning quite a bit with regards to this; and the fact that Apple did not switch its iPhone to USB-C charging (like its iPad Air and Pro models) has only added fuel to the fire.
The iPhone 12 launch came with it the next generation of MagSafe wireless chargers, as well as accessories. And Apple does have a reputation for dropping widely-accepted ports well-ahead of the rest of the market (RIP 3.5mm headphone socket).
YouTuber and Apple leaker Jon Presser took to YouTube to share some of his thoughts, saying that going totally wireless (with MagSafe) Apple would still be able to use a proprietary charging port without going straight to USB-C.
Of course, Apple never comments on rumours so there’s no way to confirm or deny this report. But ditching the power plug entirely? That does seem like a very Apple thing to do…
