- In just five days, Dauntless is already being called the new Fortnite
- The free-to-play game is a cross between Destiny and Monster Hunter World
- It is the first game out of Phoenix Games, whose founders created League of Legends
- The game sees teammates fight huge monsters to save humanity from extinction
Dauntless released just five days ago, but has already become a surprise contender for the Fortnite and Apex Legends crown.
The game, which is a bit of a mashup of Destiny and Monster Hunter World, is only the third video game to feature cross-platform play across Sony’s PlayStation, Microsoft’s Xbox and the Nintento Switch.
The game revolves around squads of players heading out into the wilderness to take down enormouse monsters, who are trying to wipe out humanity.
Like Fortnite and Apex Legends, the game is free to play. Unlike those other games, developers Phenix Labs has removed a controversial blind-buy loot-box system (which was implemented in early Beta versions of the game). Instead, players can expect the same perk-oriented season pass type system currently found in Fortnite.
Similiar to the much-hyped launch of Apex Legends, Phenix Labs forgoed traditional adverts online and on social media. Instead, it recuited a group of influencial YouTube and Twich channels for sponsored videos that demonstrated the game to their audiences.
This is the first game from Phoenix Games, however there’s no lack of talent within the company. The developer’s founders came from the hugely successful Riot games, the guys behind ‘League of Legends’.
