Zynga is pulling the cord on its 2009 farming simulator

Regardless if you played it, there’s no way that Zynga’s FarmVille didn’t affect your social media life in some way over the alst decade.

Launched in 2009, the farming simulator has become one of Facebook’s most popular game. The decision to close down the game follows Adobe’s announcement that it will no longer support Flash Player for web browsers (FarmVille runs on Flash).

FarmVille has become an obsession for some and a mild annoyance for others since it launched. Its free-to-play model and ability to connect with friends via Facebook made it a genuine phenomenon. Since then, it has been played by tens of millions.

“Following an incredible 11 years since its initial launch back in 2009, we are officially announcing the closure of the original FarmVille game on Facebook,” said Zynga in a statement.

“As previously stated, Adobe will stop distributing and updating Flash Player for all web browsers, and Facebook will stop supporting Flash games on the platform completely after December 31. FarmVille will, therefore, be directly affected as a result of this,” said Zynga in its announcement.

“We’re aware that many of you have been with us since the very beginning, helping to build an incredible global community of players over the years who’ve enjoyed this game just as much as we have. For that we say thank you,” it added.

Fortunately for the FarmVille faithful, this isn’t the end of the franchise. According to Zynga, it will be launching FarmVille 3 on mobile by the end of the year.
