The 2022 Asian Games just announced that e-sports will become a medaled event for the regional sporting event. It will join breakdancing (which will also become an Olympic medal sport in 2024).
The announcement was made by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) which says it will have six different e-sport events during the tournament, with help rom the Asian Electronic Sports Federation.
“This isn’t only a success story for AESF alone – but the e-sports community as a whole,” says the Federation’s president Kenneth Fok.
“Our past successes are rightfully celebrated but we always look forward to bigger and better achievements. Seeing Esports returning to the Asian Games in 2022 is a great landmark to achieve following years of hard work and commitment. A special you to the OCA for entrusting us with this honor and we promise to make the best out of this opportunity.”
This will be the first time that e-sports will feature as a medal event at the Asian Games. It made ana appearance back in 2018, but purely as a demonstration sport.
The 2022 Asian Games will take place from September 10 to 25, in Hangzhou China.
