It will be a medal event starting the 2024 games in Paris

Break-dancing – which is defined by the “energetic and acrobatic style of street dancing” – is set to become an Olympic sport at the 2024 games in Paris.

It will join what the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are calling ‘Urban Sports’, and join skate-boarding, surfing, sport climbing as well as softball as a medal event.

The move to include these types of sports is interesting, and appears to be an attempt by the IOC to attract a younger audience.

Social media had a mixed response to the news. Some people lambasted the inclusion of break dancing. Others thought the news was good for an underappreciated activity, or lambasted the IOC for including break-dancing before other sports.

Break-dancing (which the IOC are referring to simply as ‘breaking’) will take place in Paris’ downtown venue Place de le Concorde, right alongside three-on-three basketball.

The 2024 games will see a grand total of 329 medal events, and more than 10,500 athletes taking part. Currently, the 2020 Olympic Games which were scheduled for last summer in Tokyo, have been delated until 2021.
