PlayStation is making a price correction it feels is “long overdue”

The PlayStation 5 launches in select locations tomorrow, and Sony has unveiled its new pricing structure for games is now US$70 (previously, new titles cost US$60).

That additional US$10 has some gamers all hot and bothered, with many saying that PlayStation is deliberately using its flashy new console to get some extra cash from its most loyal followers.

However Sony heavily disputes this, saying that game development has gotten pricier over the years, especially when it comes to triple A titles such as God of War and The Last of Us 2.

It says that while its biggest and flashiest titles will come with a US$70 cost, many titles will still be available at the original US$60 price tag. Or as Sony puts it, pricing is reflective of the growing development resources needed for these ambitious games.”

According to Sony, while the bump is only of around 15 per cent, game development costs have grown 300 per cent.

“We do anticipate that a growing percentage of games will launch at $70, but not all at once and not uniformly across every publisher or every game franchise,” PlayStation added.

The launch of a new generation of games consoles would be a good time to charge gamers for extra content, especially as those games now look better and load faster. However, many gamers disagree and say that the price of the new console should more than cover the additional features, and that games should stay the usual price.

We’ll have to wait and see just how many games do end up costing US$70 in the end
