Razer is best-known for making some of the most precise gaming peripherals in the world.
The brand’s gaming accessories appear on the desks of some of the biggest gamers online, and are used by professional e-sports teams all over the world.
Now Razer has decided to switch tack, and instead of focusing purely on gamers it fancies a slice of the productivity peripheral pie.
Enter the Razer Productivity Suite, which was produced in partnership with Humanscale, a design firm that specializes in workplace ergonomics.
But do precision gaming accessories necessarily translate to the world of productivity? Does the same technology that makes for pinpoint headshots come in handy when you’re plotting a new graph on Excel?
Razer Productivity Suite: Design
The suite comes with three peripherals; the Pro Click mouse, the Pro Type keyboard and the Pro Glide mousepad. The general idea is that all three have the same durability as comparison gaming models, but are meant for the office.
Gone then are the light-up LED panels and bright green hues, instead replaced with a professional white and grey colour palette.
To really prove that these products are meant for the office (and not just lighter-coloured gaming accessories) Razer teamed up with Humanscale, to ensure its products fit the office environment. And they succeed, in some regards.
Razer Productivity Suite: Usage
The mouse is incredibly comfortable and it works incredibly well with the roll-out mouse mat. It has a nice heft to it, and some programmable buttons which are handy for those who work in multimedia.
While the Pro Type Keyboard comes with LED backlighting, I quickly turned that off (as it did not match the office setting). Otherwise, it is a comfortable mechanical keyboard that offers an extremely tactile writing experience. For the user, that is.
Within an hour of using the Pro Type Keyboard, I had three complaints from coworkers because of the noise. An hour later, that had risen to everyone in the (socially-distant) room of the office. That’s all down to those mechanical keys, which don’t half make a racket when you are furiously typing.
Razer Productivity Suite: Battery
The Pro Click mouse will give you 400 hours of use over Bluetooth, and 200 over Wi-Fi. You can also plug it in via regular USB, which will let you use it while charging.
The Pro Type keyboard gives you 12 hours with LED backlighting, and 84 hours or 78 hours on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi respectively.
Razer Productivity Suite: Verdict
The Productivity Suite is far more grown up than you’d expect for a company that makes fragging tools, and does fit with a design-led office feel. Everything is comfy and ergonomic, plus built to last.
However, if you work in an office that values peace and quiet – you’re better-off substituting the keyboard from something a little less loud.
All three products are available right now.
