The first trailer for the fourth Matrix film has dropped, and it blows away all expectations.
Watch it here:
Alright, you’re with us? Great.
What the heck did we just watch?
First off, we must say that the trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections, the fourth film in the series after The Matrix: Revolutions disappointed way back in 2003, seems to be a direct spiritual sequel to the original 1999 film, full of the same intrigue and mystery that the original story, which followed a hacker named Neo into the Matrix until he eventually discovered the power within him.
Here, we once again follow Keanu Reeves as Neo in a world that looks very much like our own in 2021, with people glued to smart phones, disassociated from their surroundings and stuck in an overly comfortable world with a sense of darkness lurking beneath every shiny exterior.
When we last left Neo, he was implied to be dead, carried off by the machines. In the final scene, the Architect and the Oracle talk, implying that the story is not over. The Oracle says she created a beautiful sunset in Neo’s honor. That is how the story ended.
Rewatch the ending here:
So how did Neo get back into this world, what is happening, and what is the plot of the Matrix Resurrections? The trailer gives us many new insights, implying that they are not in the Matrix after all, that Neo will have to go back into the Matrix in order to gain insights, but that he is being kept where he is, and kept in the dark about who he is and who his friends were, through the blue pill, which famously kept you unaware of who you were in the first film.
Color us intrigued, and we can’t wait to see what happens next when the film opens on December 23 in the Middle East.
