The new blower packs video portrait mode and a few new clever features

Oppo has unwrapped its latest version of the Reno family; the sixth pro edition packs some clever video and photography smarts, as well as ultra-fast connectivity.

The Reno range has always been about putting premium features inside a phone that won’t break the bank, and the Reno6 Pro is no exception. It packs a few nifty features that its competitor flagships wish they could have – including for the first time video portrait mode.

For those unawares, portrait modes tend to re-create that cinematic camera effect that only occurs naturally in proper DSLRs. The Reno 6 pro can produce that same look and feel – lightning sharp foreground subjects along with that creamy/blurry background effect – in both photos and videos, and rendered in real time.

That’s all powered by a 50MP quad-camera setup on the back, along with a 32MP selfie-camera on the front. Oppo has always given its cameras a bit of artificially intelligent oomph, and this Reno 6 is no different.

The AI helper can automagically detect scenes, and provide you the right camera settings for the best shot. It can also detect ambient light, and will adjust photo and video settings accordingly. According to Oppo, this makes for brighter, better and more vivid shots no matter your subject.

Under the hood, you get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G chip – which should keep multitasking fairly fast – as well as 12GB of RAM (which is more than most laptops, these days). You also get a large enough battery for two days of use, as well as Oppo’s SuperVOOC charging technology – that will top up your phone entirely from zero juice in just 31 minutes.

Elsewhere there are a few clever gaming features, such as the ability to multitask out of popular Battle Royale title PUBG while waiting for a match to start. You also get a dedicated gamer mode which ups the screen’s refresh rate and brightness, as well as boosts in-game sound.

The Oppo Reno6 5G is available right now from all good gadget shops. The phone is available in either black or blue. Check out the Oppo site for more.
