The inspirations we take, the decisions we make, and the directions we take are fuelled by the experiences we’ve had in our pursuit of excellence. However, in today’s fast-paced world it is often difficult to tune out the noise and focus on the detail and minutiae of what matters.
Spanish illustrator and painter Javi Aznarez collaborated with The Macallan to create a remarkable animation that reveals the significance of the colour red throughout the brand’s history. Here he tells Esquire Middle East about the project and the importance of time and patience plays in his creative process.

Red is the colour that I tend to use the most in my illustrations. It is a powerful colour that catches the eye and at the same time goes well with the rest of the colours. When The Macallan approached me with The Red Collection project, I was immediately inspired.
“It is only over time, when you haven’t seen the drawing for many years that you can rediscover it and truly enjoy it again”
In my drawings I try to control everything. I like that everything has a role to play, with every detail helping to create the overall piece. The trouble is that I find it difficult to be satisfied with my drawings —when you are creating a drawing you get used to constantly seeing the work and you lose that ‘surprise’ effect that the viewer experiences the first time they see the work.
It is only over time, when you haven’t seen the drawing for many years that you can rediscover it and truly enjoy it again.
