Sadly, Swedish meatballs are not included

Everybody rejoice! Ikea’s unusually popular culinary options have just got a lot cheaper. It’s not 10 or 15% cheaper either. You can now grab breakfast for just AED 1.

In celebration of singles day (a Chinese holiday celebrating being single) on November 11, Ikea is slashing the prices of its food to either AED 1 or AED 11.

Running from November 10 to November 12, Ikea is offering up its four-item breakfast for only AED 1 and its salmon balls and drink for only AED 11.

For that price you will get beans, two sausages, eggs and a hash brown. The vegetarian option offers, mushrooms, veggie sausages and a hash brown. For reference the four-item breakfast is normally AED 10.

Its salmon balls consist of ‘responsibly sourced’ salmon ball, with mash potatoes, buckwheat, cabbage, fennel and capers. The usual price for this item is AED 19. The Ikea ‘veggie balls’ are made of chick peas, green peas, carrots, corn, kale, and red peppers, served with rice and a curry sauce.

Going to the Swedish giant for salmon over sofas might seem unusual but 30% of all people at Ikea go there just for the food according to Forbes. Back in 2016, Ikea Food had annual sales of US $1.6 billion.

“We’ve always called the meatballs ‘the best sofa-seller,’” Gerd Diewald, head of Ikea’s U.S. food operations, said in the May 2017 issue of Fast Company. He went on, “When you feed them, they stay longer, they can talk about their [potential] purchases, and they make a decision without leaving the store. That was the thinking right at the beginning.”

Food at IKEA, which in the UAE includes shawarma, meatballs, a fry-up breakfast, chicken tenders and cinnamon buns, is so popular that Ikea has even considered opening up its own chain of cafes and eateries.

Say what you will, we’re very excited for our flat-pack fry-ups.
