Bill Gates donates 5% of his fortune
Put (very) simply, Bill Gates has lots of money. And he is doing good things with it. The multi-billionaire founder of Microsoft - who has previously pledged to donate 95 percent of his total wealth to charity - has just made the largest single charity donation in the past 20 years.
The man who used to sit at the top of Forbes’ richest man list, has recently donated US$4.6 billion in Microsoft shares to his personal charity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Gates Foundation was launched with his wife in 2000 to enhance global healthcare and reduce extreme poverty. In the US the charity also strives to expand educational opportunities and access to information technology.
The Philanthropist is no stranger to such big-heartedness. According to a review of Gates Foundation tax returns, annual reports and regulatory filings, his donations have reach up to a staggering US$35 billion.
This mind-blowing sum of money makes him the world’s most generous person, well, ever. That is a pretty impressive list including life-long friend of Gates’, Warren Buffett, who has donated an equally impressive total of US $21.5 billion.
Gates, however, remains the richest person on earth after the donation with a fortune of $86 billion.
A role model to many will remain Bill Gates with his acts of kindness. Perhaps, a couple more Gates' would be able to put an end to poverty.
