The Pegasus ‘vertical business jet’ is for real-life superheroes

The Pegasus eVTOL – which recently completed a model-scale hover test flight – is pretty much a real life Avenger’s Quinjet.

For non-Marvel fans, the Quinjet is a vertical take-off vehicle which is used to shuttle around Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (and their gear) around the world. And the Pegasus is pretty much a real-world version of that.

Dubbed a ‘Vertical Business Jet’ the Pegasus will take-off and land vertically, as well as hover in place. Much like Marvel’s fictional aircraft, the Pegasus uses fans to handle the takeoff bit then switches over to jet engines for thrust.

Four fans in the wings provide the downward thrust, while double-ducted fans in the rear of the plane provides forward movement. The entire process is controlled by a proprietary system, which Pegasus makers say will cut down on pilot training.

The business jet will have a top speed of 760kph, and given its ability to take off and land just about anywhere, makes it a tad more convenient than traditional private jets.

According to Pegasus Universal Aerospace, the aircraft will have four-times the range of a helicopter, and three-times the speed of previous tilt-rotor VTOL airplanes.

The South African company continues to test its vehicle, and says that it is hoping to have the final VBJ certified for regular travel as early as 2025.
