Looking for a new scene? Step into Mimi Kakushi and you’ll find yourself immersed in an oriental age back when jazz was swinging into the 1920s Osaka, merging modern art and western fashion into the nightlife and streetlife of Japan.

This unique culture clash that challenged the traditional status quo epitomized the golden era of oriental art deco. A golden age The two-floor space, brought to you by the team behind La Cantine du Faubourg, Ninive and Twiggy by La Cantine, pays homage to the modernist Mavo movement celebrating the radical and avante-garde.

This artistic anarchy, that peaked in the 1920s, shattered conventions and confronted traditions. What’s that you hear in the background? Those in the know will pick up on the distinctive sounds of trumpeter Fumio Nanri’s, known as the Satchmo of Japan, creating the perfect jazzy vibe.

Sample a taste of the East, feel the rhythm of the West. In keeping with Mimi’s ethos, playful twists tweak well-known Japanese favourites. Take your seat and savour the setting as sharing plates of sashimi, sushi, tempura and gyoza fill your table. Then move on to signature creations like a Kagoshima wagyu beef, paired with an extensive drinks menu, and an eclectic dessert selection rounding off the grand finale.

What’s in a name? Introduced in 1922 as one of the new yo-hatsu Western hairstyles, this modern bob, popular with fashionable Moga – cutting edge stylistas – translates directly as ‘covering ears’. It’s asymmetrical cut added to its quirky allure and marked a turning point in what was considered chic. Acclaimed London Interior Architecture studio Pirajean Lees, led by Clemence Pirajean and James Michael Lees, collaborated with branding agency AM Studioworks, for the design of Mimi Kakushi.
