For autumn/winter ’19, Paul Smith celebrates an icon of British country clothing by updating the classic Tattersall check.
Traditional British outdoor and riding clothing was a key point of departure for the autumn/winter ‘19 collection. Updated versions of classic riding coats featured prominently in the Paul Smith collection shown at Paris Fashion Week, as did new tailoring and outerwear designs showcasing an innovative use of the Paul Smith Tattersall check.
Following Paul Smith’s established “classic with a twist” design ethos, this traditional British fabric has been updated and modernised thanks to some innovative design choices. It appears throughout the collection in different scales – as a new oversized scale and traditional small scale – and in three unique colourways.
Firstly, the Tattersall pattern has been used as an oversized motif on classic wool overcoats. These come in a classic black colour scheme with bold yellow accents and a contrasting velvet collar. Tattersall check shirts with a long shape also featured on the catwalk as layers beneath tailoring, to create an elongated, contemporary silhouette.
Another innovative use of the check pattern comes in tailoring, where a single-button suit with punk-inspired trousers has been cut from wool Tattersall cloth in black and yellow.
