The world’s thinnest watch just took home the most coveted prize in watchmaking

Piaget’s Ultra-Thin Altiplano watch just took home the gold at 2020’s Grand Prix d’Horlogerie in Geneva.

It beat 266 other entries, all of them outstanding in some way or shape. The top watch among the 84 finalists (in some 14 categories) was the 4.3mm thick Altiplano Ultimate Automatic, the world’s thinnest automatic.

The secret behind Piaget’s watch is that the movement was built into the mainplate (as opposed to bolting a traditional movement to a structurally supporting mainplate). That plate also serves as the dial. The result is a watch that is needle thin.

Other winners included the men’s top watch that went to independent watchmaker Kari Voutilainen’s 28SC watch. The men’s complication prize was awarded to Greubel Forsey for its Hand Made 1 watch.

And the best watch with a retail price of under US$800 went to Breilting’s Superocean Heritage 57 Limited Edition II – which saw some of the proceeds from the limited edition go towards front-line workers.
