Celebrating the 2000s.

TAG Heuer has continued its birthday celebrations with the fourth in a line of five limited edition Monacos. This time the brand has gone for a black dial with flairs of red and orange.

Unveiled at the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures at the Tokyo National Museum in Japan, TAG Heuer showed off new birthday present to itself, a watch celebrating the 2000s.

1969 has proved itself to be a monumentally important year in the progression of humanity as classy beings. It’s the year we landed on the moon, the year Omega did the same, and the year that TAG Heuer and friends created the first square chronograph – the Monaco.

In celebration of this last achievement, TAG has been touring the world this year, gracing the world with a limited-run watch wherever it lays its hat. The first of these models, inspired by the years 1969 to 1979, was unveiled at the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix in May, and the second limited edition, celebrating the period from 1979 to 1989, was presented in June in Le Mans, France. The third edition of the new Monaco watch, inspired by the 1990s, made its debut in New York in July.

The ‘1989 to 1999’

The fourth watch, engraved with ‘1999 to 2009’ on its caseback, draws inspiration from the sleek style of the period. It sports a black dial with white opaline sub dials, think of it as a reverse Panda watch. The watch harks back to its sporty racing roots with red and orange accents used around each hour indices, the seconds hand, and the tips of the hours and minutes hands.

The iconic 39 mm steel case houses the Calibre 11, a modernised version of the pioneering 1969 movement of the same name. This movement allows for the chronograph functions, the date at 6 o’clock, and a lot of bragging about the history that ticks away inside your timepiece. Of course, the watch has the unusual left hand crown too.

Limited to just 169 pieces, which you can be reminded of if you turn the watch over, the piece comes in a dark blue box decorated with the Heuer logo and a horizontal check-pattern. The watch is priced at US$6,550
