- The Omega Speedmaster was the first watch on the moon as it was used by Apollo 11 astronauts
- Omega continues to celebrate that 1969 lunar mission with another limited edition timepiece
- The watch features a laser-engraved image of Buzz Aldrin stepping onto the moon on the subdial
- Those lucky enough to buy the watch also receive a special surface-of-the-moon display case and box
Omega’s Speedmaster has gone into space about as many times as the world’s astronauts, so it seems fitting to see this special edition land on our wrists fifty years on from the first Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
Omega-obsessives will no doubt remember that earlier in the year the brand dropped ana ll-gold Speedmaster with burgundy details (it became our watch of the week). And while this piece is an important nod to Omega’s history, it may be a tad overstated for some.
That’s where the new 50th anniversary Apollo 11 Speedmaster comes in; with less gold and a lot more steel. It also comes with a grey dial, which is bang on trend.
The 42mm Omega has a varnished grey centre, with a black outer ring, along with Omega’s own Moonshine Gold for the indexes, hands and the classic-feeling brand logo.
This isn’t your usual Speedmaster though; there are a few little and large details on this to make it a true collectors’ item. Take a look at the chronograph dials, at the nine o’clock you will see a laser engraved image of astronaut Buzz Aldrin taking his first steps on the moon.
Now draw your eye to the outer dial, it’s hard to spot, but you can see a small golden ‘11’, in reference to the Apollo 11 mission itself.
If you’re able to drag your eyes off the watch, turn it over to see the words “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
All of these quirks will rest easy in your NASA-style presentation box.
Only 6,969 of these beauties will ever exist, and you can pick one up later this year for $9,650.
