Titled ‘An Unrepeatable Ritual’, Gucci’s Fall 2020 show was characterised by a seam of dichotomy that ran through both its name and nature.
Invitees to the expectedly vintage-inspired collection were notified by way of a contemporary WhatsApp message from brand creative director, Allesandro Michele – a show of both environmental consciousness and acute zeitgeist.
The digital message welcomed its guests to fashion house’s HQ by presenting an image of an embroidered Gucci label decorated with the same words emblazoned on the uniforms of the runway-dressers; ‘Façonnier de Rêves’, and the ethereal ‘dream maker’ tone was set by mood and translation.
The experience from entry to presentation was based around a backstage experience. Attendees entered through what felt like a dressing room, before being seated in front of an imposing glass-carousel that spun the stoic models and a juxtaposingly chaotic line-up of 60 looks 360 degrees around the room. The audience became not only the spectators, but also the spectated.
The sensitive circus presented a smaller number of menswear looks within the coed line-up then we have become accustomed to, but the limited offerings of serious impact and complex personality.
From vibrant, jewel hued silks to muted crop-top layered tailoring, Michele hopped, skipped and jumped through the eras.
From a Victorian, overgrown public-schoolboy style he traversed a disco-fever inducing get-up, exploring ‘60s Teddy Boys, ‘70s punk and ‘80s grunge on the way.
The eclectically editorial show was a masterpiece of the experimental showmanship and untethered genius we have come to know and love of Alessandro Michele’s Gucci, a love he clearly reciprocates for the brand itself; “Because this is the home I worship: the blessed passage through which beauty comes out of its shell”.
