Japanese fashion legend Kenzo is coming out of retirement at the age of 80.
He won’t be diving back into the world of fashion, however, instead, he’ll be concentrating on the world of interior design by launching a new brand called K3.
Kenzo sold his successful clothing and perfume label, as well as the right to use his name, to LVMH luxury group back in 1993. He returned from fashion six years later.
While he has since collaborated on a number of different products, apparently he missed the buzz of working for his own band.
“Twenty years ago I wanted to travel and I didn’t want to work any more,” said the pioneering designer. For his comeback, he wanted to do something a little more ‘timeless’.
“With clothes, you always have to be in the collections, and it needs more organisation, workshops and all that. I don’t want to work like that anymore,” he has said. Design is “really about the art of living”, he added.
The first furniture, carpets, wallpaper, ceramics and linens designed by Kenzo were presented on Friday, at a Parisian home show and the new K3 boutique in the French capital.
All his creations carry a ‘kintsugi’ symbol, in honour of the Japanese art of repairing broken porcelain and ceramics with lacquer, mixed with powdered gold.
