Featuring new hardware, software and longer battery

US accessory-maker Fossil has done well over recent years in the world of smartwatches. It is now on its fifth generation of Wear OS smartwatches, and these ones look like the best ones yet.

The new model – which is only one of a few that fully integrates into Google’s Wear OS – has been called the Gen 5, and for the first time, you’ll be able to take calls from a tethered iPhone.

In addition to the ability to play nice with Apple’s blower, the next-gen smartwatch are hybrids that also include a microphone and swim-proof speaker. You also get pre-installed apps such as Cardiogram, Spotify and Noonlight.

Under the dial, you get 1GB of RAM, storage space (for music) of 8GB, and the whole thing is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset.

Fossil has said the wearer definitely gets more than a day’s worth of battery life, which is pretty good for a touchscreen watch if it turns out to be true. You also get some new modes, including Daily Extended (for battery saving) and Time-only mode.

New Gen 5 models are available right now (in a range of cases and straps), and there are new watches expected out this fall.
