Worn cleverly, it’s casual and comfortable — but there are limits

In 2016, literally, billions were spent on trainers, compression leggings and track tops.

But only 50 percent of it was bought by people intending to wear it while engaging in actual sports. Virtually every fashion label this season offers tracksuit bottoms, sweatshirts and trainers. From high-fashion hoodies (Gucci and Prada) to tailored track pants (Ermenegildo Zegna and Giorgio Armani).

Here, to help you embrace sportswear without looking like you’re trying too hard is our guide to wearing this season’s best sportswear like a grown-up.

Invest in a windbreaker – but ensure it’s up to the job

When you’re travelling to cold/wet climes for business, avoid the sartorial crime of wearing your expensive new technical windbreakers over a poor suit (sticking out at the bottom) and brown winklepickers. Now windbreakers are on the fashion chart, opt for a paper-thin, knee-length style in a bright shade over tailored separates in a neutral hue. It’s a statement piece, so make one.

Wear tracksuit bottoms with a suit jacket – just be sure to avoid grey marl

Track pants cut close in tailoring fabrics look great with a classic suit jacket. Don’t go too literal with the track pant thing — anything baggy in jersey looks scruffy.

Buy simple trainers – but go for a classic style

White tennis shoes, all-black Flyknits or blue varsity-style trainers will look great with more casual outfits — cropped chinos and button-down shirts. If you plan on wearing trainers with a suit, keep them all white, make sure the suit is single-breasted, and the trousers are cut with a slight crop.

Don’t wear them to a funeral or court; that’d be stupid.

Wear a hoodie – but never, ever, put the hood up

Tricky territory for adults, but worn correctly a hoodie can look cool and understated. Avoid disasters with a dark style teamed with a first-rate T-shirt and classic soft overcoat in tonal shades. Alternatively, go for a statement shade top under your everyday suit. Two rules: never wear the hood up, even if it’s raining; and make sure it’s relatively fitted.

Buy a backpack – in leather, to last the journey

Backpacks are, er, back. Buy one in prime leather to ensure you can use it as easily for work as you can on the weekend; keep embellishment to a minimum.
