Facebook is teaming up with Ray-Ban to make VR glasses for your face

Facebook has partnered up with Ray-Ban’s parent company Luxottica to produce a pair of Smart Glasses.

The Facebook specs are due sometime next year.

According to Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg, he loves the Italian sunglasses maker.  “After spending time with their team and visiting their factory, I knew that they were the right partner for us to help bring the best technology together with the best glasses,”he said in a Facebook Connect livestream.

The smart specs will feature Ray-Ban branding and will include virtual and augmented reality. Zuck said that this was part of a multiyear deal with Ray-Ban.

Zuckerberg also said that Facebook’s Project Aria test glasses are already being worn by Facebook employees and some public contractors. According to the head of Facebook Hardware, these glasses are not for sale and do not feature augmented reality. Instead, they capture audio, video and location data (that better feed the Facebook algorithm.

Employees are currently being trained on when and where to use these new glasses. According to Andrew Bosworth, head of Facebook hardware, employees are not allowed to wear them in the bathroom.

For obvious reasons.
