The Fight DXB proves UAE is ready for professional boxing

Last night saw The Fight DXB Uncovered take place, at a packed Emirates Golf Club.

The highlight of the match was surely in the bantamweight division, where Nigerian-born and Dubai-based Aliu Bamidele Lasisi took the title WBC International super-flyweight crown.

Lasisi – who trains at Ahmed A Siddiqui’s Round 10 boxing club – beat out Nicaraguan Ricardo Blandon by unanimous decision. Lasisi, who was fighting in Dubai for the fifth time, won the bout 114-111 despite a knockdown during the course of the fight.

“I am very happy to fight in my hometown in front of all of these fans, and I’m pleased to win the WBC International super-flyweight title,” said Lasisi. “”Ricardo Blandon is a good fighter and was a very tough guy. I thought I would knock him out but he gave me a very good fight.”

Elsewhere, the WBO European featherweight title was also up for grabs, and Irish Olympian David Oliver Joyce came out on top.

More importantly, last night’s The Fight DXB Uncovered proves that the UAE’s boxing scene is ready for professional boxing. The evening was put on by Round 10 Boxing Club in partnership with MTK Global, which organized a multi-national fight card including boxers from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, the UK and Ireland.

Not only that, but the fact that both the WBO European Featherweight and WBC International Super-Flyweight titles were up for grab saw the UAE host two new boxing champions. The fact that home-grown Lasisi took one of the titles last night, further proves that the sport has come a long way in the region. The UAE is now ready for the big leagues.

International fighters are often spotted in Dubai – including Floyd Mayweather and most recently, Amir Khan. Speaking to Esquire Middle East, Khan admitted that he’d love to have an international bout in the city.
