One of the Middle East’s top racing events has been named one of the top four sporting events worldwide in 2020, and the top F1 event of the year.
That’s right, the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, the ‘Miracle in the Desert’ race, has been nominated for a BAFTA TV Award.
It was the only F1 event to be nominated, with England v France: The Final of the Autumn Nations Cup, England v West Indies Test Cricket, and London Marathon 2020 also nominated.

The event was held November 29, 2020 at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir Bahrain. It was the sixteenth time that the Grand Prix had been part of the Formula One World Championship.
The race was originally supposed to take place in March of last year before being pushed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The event took place behind closed oors, with a special dispensation that allowed local healthcare workers to attend the event with their families.
Lewis Hamilton took the number one spot for Mercedes, followed by his teammate Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen for Red Bull.
The race was notable for Romain Grosjean’s crash, which forced the race to stop and then restart on the third lap. The nickname Miracle in the Desert was given the race due to Grosjean’s escape from the crash. Other crashes like it, that involved spearing into the crash barrier in 1973 and 1974, saw both racers killed.
The production team for the event was nominated, run by Sky Sports Formula 1.
The BAFTA TV Awards are set for June 6 2021.
