New series will be directed by Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gun

It looks like the DC Universe is starting to wake up again; after giving the greenlight to Matt Reeves’ Batman spinoff, it is now producing a Suicide Squad spinoff series called Peacemaker.

The eight-episode season will star John Cena as the titular character, and will be directed by James Gun – who previously directed Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy.

The movie is part of a new fruitful partnership between HBO Max and DC Comics.

Gunn will serve as the writer and part director along with John Cena as executive producer. Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran will take on co-executive production duties.

HBO’s streaming platform will host the Peacemaker series, which will go into the origin story of Christopher Smith, a pacifist diplomat that ends up having to break his own moral code to ensure peace (at any cost).

The character is very much an anti-hero, so it will be interesting to see how the film stands up to the usual superhero/supervillain tropes.

The first season of Peacemaker is set to begin production early next year. It is expected to hit streaming screens in August 2021.

In case you missed it, HBO Max will also be showing Justice League: The Synder Cut sometime early next year. And we’ve just been given a brand new trailer for the film – set to air over four exclusive episodes on HBO’s streaming platform.

The trailer gives us a look at Ray Porter as Darkseid, and a better glimpse of Henry Cavill and Superman’s black suit. There’s also never-before-seen-footage of Ezra Miller’s The Flash, as well as the introduction of Kiersey Clemon’s Iris West.
