Elon Musk has surpassed Amazon boss Jeff Bezos to become the world’s richest person this weekend, with an estimated wealth of $188 billion, according to Bloomberg News.
The entrepreneur and Tesla Inc. chief surpassed his long-time rival thanks to a boost in Tesla shares over the weekend, which were up as much as 7.4 percent, landing it at a record high of $811.61. According to the report, that puts his net worth of more than $188.5 billion, $1.5 billion more than Bezos.
Musk who, among other investments, owns a 20 percent stake in Telsa, has seen his wealth skyrocket over the past year thanks to Telsa becoming the world’s most valuable carmaker. Shares in the electric car company have surged more than eight-fold over the past 12 months.
Musk, who co-founded and sold Internet payments company PayPal Holdings Inc, now leads some of the most futuristic companies in the world.
Besides Tesla, he heads rocket company SpaceX and Neuralink, a startup that is developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect the human brain to computers.
