Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton will be getting a knighthood, after he took home his seventh world title.
The knighthood comes on the back of what was a big year for Hamilton, who tied with Michael Schumacher’s seven world title wins, and also broke the German driver’s all-time race win record.
Hamilton will go on to join other British motorsport stars to have been knighted, including Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Frank Williams and Sir Patrick Head.
Aside from the country’s highest honour, Hamilton was also named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, BBC sports personality of the yera, and was featured in Time Magazine’s 100 most influenctial people.
“Lewis is a true giant of our sport and his influence is huge both in and out of a car,” Formula 1’s new CEO Stefano Domenicali said about Hamilton’s knighthood.
“What he has achieved is phenomenal with still more to come. All of us at Formula 1 congratulate him on this well deserved recognition of his achievements and look forward to seeing more of his brilliance in 2021.”
