YouTube is ramping up advertising significantly for 2021

YouTube is going to be getting a lot more ad-heavy come the New Year.

The company just announced via its blog that it has revised its terms of service to allow ads to appear on every video across the platform. Currently, channels must participate in the YouTube Partner Program – which allows adverts to appear on a creator’s content and for them to generate revenue for those adverts.

Currently, you needed to have more than 1,000 subscribers to participate in the program – anyone with less than that will not see adverts on their content.

But that will all change come 2021. Ads will automatically be added to all videos, regardless of whether or not you have opted in. And unless you are part of the partner program, you won’t see a cent of that ad revenue.

It is thought that this is so YouTube can increase advertising revenue, while at the same time encouraging users to subscribe to its YouTube Premium subscription service (which does not have any adverts).

The new policy will hit the United States in January and then very quickly spread to the rest of world shortly after that.
