Kim Kardashian West: a multi-millionaire, reality television star and home movie-maker isn’t happy with the way Facebook handles hate speech. In protest, she is quitting Facebook and Instagram for a single day in support.
Kardashian announced her personal protest using social media platforms Instagram and Facebook.
The protest was organized by Stop Hate for Profit, a group dedicated to holding social media companies accountable. Kardashian West said that she is hitting the pause button on both Facebook and Instagram out of support.
“I love that I can connect directly with you through Instagram and Facebook, but I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation – created by groups to sow division and split America apart only to take steps after people are killed,” she explained on Instagram.
“Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy. Please join me tomorrow when I will be “freezing” my Instagram and FB account to tell Facebook to #StopHateForProfit.” She also posted on Facebook.
Other celebrities involved are Kate Hudson (who followed up her social media protest with a sponsored post about baby protein) and Sacha Baron Cohen, who appears to only use his social media profiles to troll Mark Zuckerberg anyway.
The campaign is also pushing advertisers to abandon social media platforms out of solidarity. So far, Microsoft, Starbucks and Coca-Cola have pulled some advertising from Facebook.
