An incredibly rare – and incredibly large – black hole has just been spotted by scientists.
Generally, black holes come in two different categories; big and super big. Most black holes have a mass of around five times our solar system’s sun. However, every now and again a black hole is spotted which is far, far bigger.
This is one of the latter.
It was spotted by the Laser Interferometry Gravitational Wave Observatory Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Cooperation, the worldwide team astronomers directly observed the gravitational waves of an intermediate-mass great void, with a mass 142 times the mass of our very own Sunlight. That’s big.
According to Dr. Karan Jani of Vanderbilt College, the black hole located was created by two separate, smaller great black holes – roughly 85 and also 65 times the mass of the Sun – which then collided.
“This is a milestone in modern astronomy and an individual milestone after six years of extensive research of hunting these elusive great voids,” the Professor said.
“The system we’ve found is so peculiar that it damages a variety of previous presumptions regarding exactly how black holes develop.”
Jani says that this black hole is incredibly rare.
” We have checked out every known scenario that would have developed this great void yet do not have a definitive explanation for it just yet,” Jani concluded.
“What we do know for certain is that whatever makes this intermediate-mass great void is a much rarer procedure. We will require to locate a lot more to comprehend their origins.”
