Engineering firm Furrion Exo-Bionics has just unveiled an impressive four-legged 5,000kg powered exoskeleton suit dubbed ‘Prosthesis’.
While the mechanized walking tank might look like something headed straight for the army, its real mission is somewhat surprising. Furrion want to use its colossal four-legged exoskeleton for… racing.
The company recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to create a “global racing league that would pit multiple world-class athletes in head-to-head competitions, through complex technical obstacle courses, wearing giant powered mech suits.”
Backers of the Kickstarter campaign will receive a “one-on-one mech pilot training” or get free tickets to watch the mechs race at a future event.
The company’s flagship mech is what you see here. It took over three years of field trials – including engineering and pilot training – to create the all-terrain suit. It has four massive legs that will allow it to lift cars, troop through the snow and even climb boulders.
“We ended up with four legs because the pilot has four limbs, and the machine has the wide stable form factor that it has so that it’s easy to balance,” chief test pilot and project co-founder Jonathan Tippett told CNET.
