Italy’s most famous tenor, Andrea Bocelli gave a little hope to millions of people stuck at home on Easter Sunday amid the Covid-19 lockdown with his #MusicForHope concert in Milan.
The Lombardy region has been the hardest hit in Italy’s coronavirus crisis, with more than 9,000 deaths.
“Thanks to music, streamed live, bringing together millions of clasped hands everywhere in the world, we ill hug this wounded Earth’s pulsing heart,” Bocelli said in a statement.
He added: “The Duomo will be completely empty. This, on its own, already makes the situation abnormal.”
“But in this case, and I repeat, as this won’t be a concert and it won’t be a performance, it will be a prayer and as a consequence it will not be important who is present physically but rather who wants to be with me spiritually in that moment.”
More than 11 million people tuned in live and were blown away by his rendition of Amazing Grace on the steps of the cathedral.
He was invited to sing by the city of Milan and its cathedral, the “Duomo di Milano” and was called up by Lady Gaga to take part in her streaming initiative along with other musicians to raise funds.
