Bahrain saw its lowest temperature ever recorded this week, at around one degree Celsius.
The unusually cold temperatures have been attributed to a cold snap that has seen snowfall on the likes of Saudi Arabia and Iraq – Baghdad saw only its second snowfall in more than a 100 years.
The regular temperature levels for Bahrain in the month of February are around 21 degrees.
“The lowest temperature recorded was 8.2 degrees Celsius, while it felt like about one degree,” said Bahrain’s Meteorological Directorate at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunication.
The Ministry said that strong winds near monitoring systems also contributed to the one-degree recording.
Meteorologists have said that it is strong northern winds that are affecting Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, bringing temperatures well below normal levels due to polar air movements around the Arabian Gulf.
According to new weather models, the Northwestern winds are expected to dissipate as the week continues. That means the city of Bahrain will heat up and experience humidity, and slight fog.
The meteorological society says it expects Bahrain to rise to normal levels for the month of February, by next Tuesday.
The UAE – especially the Northern Emirates – have also been affected by the cold weather. According to the Brazilian scientists on Seymour Island monitoring station – Dubai is currently the same temperature as the Antarctic.
