Almost 70% of Venice is flooded in a freak storm incident. The popular tourist destination has been hit by another high tide.
The local Il Gazzettino newspaper reports that St Mark’s square was closed off to pedestrians and water levelsare still rising.
AP reports that Italy’s government declared a state of emergency seeking to release funds to repair the historic lagoon city after it was damaged by the highest tide in 50 years.
Mayor Luigi Brugnaro blamed climate change for the “dramatic situation” in the historical city. He has also made a speech calling for the completion of the long-delayed Moses flood defense project.
The the flooding damage has already cost the city more than hundreds of millions of euros.
