Ever since the Joker has become Warner Bros’ highest grossing film of the year, raking in a massive $550 million worldwide in the first 10 days of its release, there have been calls for a possible sequel.
Now, we’ve previously said that the movie is perfectly set up for a sequel featuring Batman but director Todd Phillips had dashed all the hopes of that at the premiere when he said that there wouldn’t be a sequel.
Phillips at an LA press conference said: “We made this movie, I pitched it to Warner Bros. as one movie. It exists in its own world. That’s it.”
But maybe he could be convinced to change his mind. In the same interview, Phillips also said that “I will do anything Joaquin wants to do.’ And I would.”
In a recent interview however, Phoenix has said that still cares about what happens next for his character that was an all consuming part of his life for the better part of the entire filming process.
“Long before the release or before we had any idea if it would be successful, we talked about sequels,” Phoenix said to Los Angeles Times’ The Envelope. “In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, ‘Todd, can you start working on a sequel? There’s way too much to explore.’ It was kind of in jest — but not really.”
Given that the film is the highest grossing film Warner Bros Studios has made this year, clocking in at US $548,290,190 worldwide in just mid-October, the studio might definitely green light a sequel or maybe even a trilogy.
Unfortunately only time will tell if we will see a Joaquin-Phillips led sequel or not.
